THE PARTY LAVISHLY PARTIES TO CELEBRATES THE BIRTHDAY OF THE DAUGHTER OF A FORMER PARTY SECRETARY WHO NOW IS A FIRST SECRETARY! By Luis Ramón Hernández for Cuba Free Press.
Manicaragua.- Officials of the Communist Party last Sunday lavishly celebrated the birthday of the daughter of a former Communist Party secretary of Manicaragua at a residence at No. 8, Africa St. between Santo Domingo and Salud, Neighborhood 72. The former Manicaragua secretary,Rene Pena Carrazana is now the party's first secretary in Placetas. Among the many other party dignitaries present were Jorge Alberto Hurtado and Redei de Armas.
Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez, the first secretary of the Communist Party in Villa Clara arrived Saturday to begin fiesta preparations. On the menu were such items as two roast pigs of more than 100 pounds each, 11 cases of beer, six cases of good rum, a cake costing 5 pesos, another large cake which came especially from Havana, bottled sodas, a stew and in general two types of food, one for adults and the other for the children and, finally, two piñatas for separate groups of kids.
Dozens of state-registered cars were parked at the residence, including Ladas, Nivas and ex-Soviet Jeeps. The government's official photographer and the government's music were brought in from Placetas. At the end of the party some of the invitees retired to the farm owned by Rene Pena's brother-in-law on the outskirts of Manicaragua to carry on with their festivities.
Some non-participants said this was a far cry from the parties available to the lower class in Cuba. One non-party observer even was heard to say, "The party was characterized by waste and opulence."
