ANOTHER RALLY SOLICITS THE RETURN OF ELIAN TO CUBA By Orestes Martín Pérez, Cuba Free Press
PINAR DEL RIO - The government carried out another protest demanding the return of Elian Gonzalez to Cuba today on the landing strip at the Borrego airport near the city of Pinar del Rio. Many persons outwitted their "attendance monitors" and slipped back to their homes when they had gone half way to the airport and many others refused, conscientiously, to attend. Nevertheless the political activity was attended by numerous members of the public, perhaps a majority being students. It was noticeable how many elementary students had to be rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital. They nearly fainted from fatigue and some parents said later that the children suffered from a nutritional shortage because of the insufficient lunches that had been given them at the cafeterias of the schools they attend.
The political mess around the child, Elian, near victim of a shipwreck, has worn out everyone. The TV only offers political rallies, repeating themselves and full of expressions attacking the United States and praising the revolution and its leader, without adding new information to what is already known. If any record has been made this time, it is that marked by the use of minors in the rallies. Because of their youthful innocence, they are more easily manipulated, a practice that the public regards with absolute contempt towards those who intend to get political gains with such procedures.
