SCHOOL UNIFORMS REQUIRED, NEVER MIND THE FIT By Orestes Martín Pérez, Cuba Free Press.

PINAR DEL RIO - Children in Cuba cannot get into class without a uniform but often their parents cannot get them, at least in this area. The official weekly Juventud Rebelde (Rebel Youth) published a letter recently in which a mother protested because her son was not allowed into school without his uniform. The problem, the mother explained, was that the uniform was not available in stores.

Even when parents do find uniforms, they often can't find the right sizes for their children; the most popular sizes never seem to be available. If they do find one they can use, it costs 20 pesos each for the shirt and pants, or maybe they can buy the shirt in the dollar stores for the equivalent of 50 pesos.

A few days ago, I heard my neighbor complaining that her pre-school son had been issued a uniform that she was told must last him through the fourth grade; from age 5 through age 9 or 10!
