REPORT ON BEATING OF INMATE BY DEPUTY CHIEF OF UNIT TWO IN SANTA CLARA PRISON By Juan Antonio Soto, Cuba Free Press.
The following information came in messages from Guillermo Pérez Llera, the spokesman for the Movimiento Nacional de Resistencia Cívica (National Movement for Civil Resistance) and currently a political prisoner in Unit Two of the Combinado del Centro (Central Prison), in Santa Clara province:
In this unit there is no medical care of any kind. When inmates go to the infirmary the attendants inject them with water so as to deceive them.
In Area No. 9 the bunk beds are of three tiers, with top bunks almost three meters high. Inmates prefer to sleep on the floor so as to avoid a fall.
An outbreak of bed bugs has begun in this area. Prisoners spend their days "chasing the insects," but the outbreak is of such magnitude that it has been impossible to eliminate it.
On May 26, 1999, the deputy chief of this unit, Lt. Carlos Salgado Cabrera of Municipality 10 in Santa Clara (provincial capital of Villa Clara) beat inmate Félix Bolaños López, of "calle Salud No. 2, entre Carreteras a Africa y Santo Domingo" (2 Salud St. between Africa and Santo Domingo Highways), municipality of Manicaragua, Villa Clara province. The beating left Bolaños López, 26, with two fractured ribs.
