JOURNALIST'S WIFE CAMPAIGNS FOR HIS RELEASE By Mary Miranda, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - A jailed journalist's wife has asked the dignitaries who will attend the 9th Ibero-American Summit in Havana to intercede with the Cuban government to secure her husband's release. Bernardo Arévalo Padrón's wife, Libertad, says her husband is only "a communicator outside the State's control" and was jailed for exercising his liberty of expression.
Arévalo Padrón is serving a 6-year sentence in work camp No. 16 at maximum security Ariza prison in Cienfuegos, central Cuba. He has stated he will refuse to leave the island once he is released. According to his wife, the political police harass him in prison to dissuade him from continuing his journalism work after his eventual release.
