RESEARCHERS MAKE SIGNIFICANT FINDS IN WESTERN CUBA By Tania Quintero, Cuba Free Press.

HAVANA - Cuban and German researchers recently found two significant plant species in Sabanalamar, near the western tip of Cuba. The investigators, from the University of Frankfort and the Superior Pedagogic Institute of Pinar del Río found a thorny, leafless plant which they initially catalogued as belonging to the species catesbea and an orchid, eulophia ecristata, of which only two specimens are known to exist on the island.

The team has been working in the protected area of Sabanalamar where there are more than 160 varieties of flora, 50 of which are endemic to Cuba.
