HEPATITIS OUTBREAK IN MATANZAS By Mary Miranda, Cuba Free Press.

HAVANA - Public Health authorities announced there is a hepatitis epidemic in the Hermanos Mestre neighborhood in the city of Matanzas in west central Cuba but did not state which of the hepatitis viruses is guilty of the infection.

Physicians confined 28 families who are all infected to their homes for fear of spreading the disease. In addition, public health officials recommended water-boiling measures to the public, especially in homes with children. In fact, most cases reported concerned minors. Several physicians, who asked not to be identified, said that the outbreaks are the result of not treating the drinking water with chlorine.

One observer said, "They either can't or won't (treat the water) or else it's only the swimming pools for international tourists that get the chlorine."
