LOCAL PARTY OFFICIAL LAMBASTS AFRICAN CUBANS By Ramón Humberto Colás, Cuba Free Press.
LAS TUNAS - First Secretary José Antonio Puga of the Communist Party organization of the municipality of Amancio Rodríguez in Las Tunas province attacked African Cubans in a speech Sunday, Sept. 26.
"Blacks," Puga told a mass meeting in the eastern Cuban municipality, "have to be grateful to the revolution for everything they have. There is no justification for people of that race to be counterrevolutionaries."
As the highest-ranking official of his organization, Puga sees "blacks as a dead weight on the revolution." He said before the revolution they "had nothing and today they are professionals, thanks to the victory of Jan. 1, 1959."
One African Cuban in military uniform who was listening commented to a friend, "That man is crazy." A teacher at the Gerardo Rodríguez secondary school said, "That is pure racism. His true colors just came out."
Other African Cubans at the mass rally said they felt "uncomfortable" and "irritated" by Puga's comments.
