GOVERNMENT CRACKS DOWN ON PEOPLE PROCESSING HAM AT HOME By Mary Miranda, Cuba Free Press.

HAVANA - Various residents of Colón, in the central Cuba province of Sancti Spíritus had a thriving sideline processing hams at home until the Technical Department of Investigations (TDI) of the National Police came calling this week.

The enterprising ham processors had not asked the government for the proper permits. According to a knowledgeable source, local authorities forbid ham processing as a cottage industry. Authorities fined each processor they caught 6,000 pesos.

Government journalists gave a major play to the police actions. Some observers said this possibly was to try to deter others from processing their hams.
