CUBAN EMIGRATION AUTHORITIES DENY VISA TO JOURNALIST By Ricardo González Alfonso, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - Emigration authorities of the Cuban Interior Ministry denied an exit visa to independent journalist Raúl Rivero Castañeda. Again.
They denied his requests for an exit visa in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. In July of this year, Rivero had requested permission to go to New York to receive the Mary Moor Cabot prize, awarded to him by Columbia University.
The prize is awarded every year to journalists in recognition of their work for the development of inter-American relations and the defense of freedom of expression. Today Cuban authorities notified Rivero that he will not be able to leave the country. The awards ceremony is set for September 28, in New York. Rivero is the director of Cuba Free Press.
