CUBAN CONSUMERS HURTING - EVEN WITH DOLLARS IN HAND By Magaly Cruz Téllez, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - Cuban consumers don't get much respect these days. Their pesos are welcome in very few places and the government requires passport fees, for example, to be paid in U.S. dollars. And even when Cubans have dollars to spend, they don't get the courtesy they might expect.
This past weekend, at the shop in the dollar area of Havana's Frank País Hospital, a clerk refused to show a shower curtain until the customer demonstrated she had dollars to spend. But even then the clerk did not allow the customer to inspect the merchandise for quality. When asked about a guarantee, the clerk said: "I have sold many of these and nobody has complained. But if there is a problem, you have no right to come back asking for your money or an exchange."
