GOVERNMENT PROMISES IMPROVEMENTS IN TOOTHPASTE By Tania Quintero, Cuba Free Press

HAVANA - Perla-brand toothpaste, manufactured in Cuba, will be improved in the next few days, according to government officials. The improved product will be packed in aluminum tubes printed with the brand name, in two sizes: 120 and 180 grams.

Up to now, the toothpaste, which users often describe as lumpy and/or without flavor or with an anise flavor, has been packed in blank aluminum tubes with ill-fitting caps. All the Perla produced in Cuba is destined for the domestic market. It is distributed through the existing rationing system at the rate of two tubes every three or four months for a family of five.

Consumers with access to dollars may also purchase Pepsodent or Close-Up, also packaged in Cuba, at dollar stores at prices between $1.15 and $2.40. Pepsodent and Close-Up are name-brands of the Anglo-Dutch conglomerate Unilever.
