CUBA PRESS COMMUNIQUE TO THE MEDIA By Raúl Rivero, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The journalists and others working with Cuba Free Press hereby express their backing for and solidarity with journalist Berta Mexidor, who became the victim in the past week of a violent eviction from her home in the eastern city of Las Tunas.
Ms. Mexidor founded and headed the news agency known as Liberty (Libertad). Despite problems of misery and harrassment, she began to transmit the messages that journalism reclaims and urges for the Cuban society.
She and her husband, the licensed Ramón Colás, a frequent cooperator with our agency, and their children were forced out of their home in the outskirts of the city where a paramilitary institution is stationed.
These Cubans also have worked hard in the organization of the Independent Library in their part of the country.
With a sense of strong solidarity with these Las Tunas citizens ("Tuneros"), Cuba Free Press makes public its preoccupation with the violence demonstrated by local government authorities during the process of the eviction. Agents insulted, threatened and even mistreated the mother of Ramón Colás and the couple's children. Violence is always degrading. But it seems monstrous when it is applied to people who work in the world of words and ideas in a peaceful and constructive way.
Raúl Rivero Castañeda, Director of the independent agency Cuba Free Press.
