"PEOPLE'S POWER" FORCES JOURNALIST, OTHERS INTO CROWDED SHELTER By Por Alberto Iglesias, Cuba Free Press.

HAVANA - Government authorities are evicting certain people and their families from their homes and forcing them into crowded shelters for the homeless. Among those recently treated this way are the family of Humberto Colás and his wife Berta Mexidor Vázquez, 33, who is director of the Independent Library Project and the independent news agency called Liberty Press.

The couple and his mother, Berta Mexidor, 73, and their two children, ages 9 and 13, were forced from their home of several years in the Santos neighborhood in Buenavista, Las Tunas province on Aug. 23 and with some of their belongings taken to a community of homeless people 62 kilometers (about 40 miles) away.

When the older woman refused to leave the vehicle which carried the family, the vice president of the Las Tunas' People's Power (legislature) said, "If you don't leave the car immediately we will drag you out. You have to come down to the good or the bad."
