MININT AGENTS HASSLE UKRANIAN SON OF UKRANIAN WOMAN By Juan Carlos Recio Martínez, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The 29-year-old son of a Cuban man and a Ukranian woman is suffering a severe nervous crisis here as a result of hassling by agents of the Cuban Interior Ministry (MININT). He is Ernesto Cárdenas Alexander, who also has his mother's Ukranian citizenship. Cuban agents denied him a residence permit in Cuba so he expects to be deported.
. Héctor Trujillo Pis, an activist in the Democratic Solidarity Party, a dissidence group, has reported that Pedro Cárdenas Silvero, Ernesto's father and a worker at the business called Tenería of Caibarién, said his son was detained May 7 in Havana by agents of the Department for Control of Foreigners, MININT.
The Communist officials accuse Ernesto Cárdenas Alexander of wanting to travel to Jamaica as a tourist for at least 21 days so he could come back to Cuba and this way possibly renew his tourist visa with the Cuban government.
The MININT agents also accuse Ernesto of having the intention of migrating to the United States. The Ukranian ambassador in Havana rejected that accusation on jurisdictional grounds. Meanwhile, the authorities took Ernesto's passport, code number AC-096055, which had been issued by Ukrania on May 26, 1997 and does not expire until the year 2007.
