GOVERNMENT ARRESTS TENANTS AND HARASSES LANDLORDS By Emiliano Estrada, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The government has had three Camaguay tenants arrested as part of a repressive wave against the rental business.
Since the end of last year, authorities have been giving "Warning Notices" to owners of houses who rent all or part of their homes out for U.S. dollars. This seems to grow out of recent legislation against solicitation, prostitution and corruption of minors.
The latest to be arrested include Rita Irene Gonzalez Munoz and her husband, Erick Lopez Arauja of the community of Santa Rita. Authorities searched taheir home and seized their property - electric equipment, furniture, bed linens and other furnishings. They were not informed of any charges. Erick is in Ceramica Roja (Red Ceramic) prison and Rita is in the women's prison known as Kilo 5.
The government also invaded the home of Caridad Garcia of the San Esteben community. Police officials took two air conditioners, a refrigerator, dishes, furniture and bed linens from her home. She is being held in isolation in the Third National Police unit in the Technical Department of Investigations.
The targets of the arrests seem to be those who rent out rooms for dollars for a few days. They are subject to controls by the Department of Investigations, the Office of State Security, the Office of Immigration and Foreign Affairs, the National Office of Taxation (ONAT), the Housing Institute and the Public Health Ministry.
The government's assault against tenants has provoked dozens of landlords to turn in their housing permits in the past three months.
