WIFE DISCUSSES CASE OF REPORTER LUIS RAMON HERNANDEZ, STILL UNDER ARREST. By Alina Becerra Acosta, wife of Luis Ramón, for Cuba Free Press.
Santa Clara.- My husband, Cuba Free Press correspondent Luis Ramón Hernández Rodríguez (also a member of the Democratic Action Party), who was arrested April 2, was scheduled for an appointment today (April 4) with a cardiologist. It was to be a follow-up to a heart attack he suffered some 18 months ago. He had another occurrence of the problem later and has been under medical watch since.
This morning "Coya,"a comrade of my husband's in the struggle for human rights took the medical list to the State Security office to try to persuade agents to take my husband to the doctor. Officials there told him they would not do so.
But later in the day, after a number of interested neighbors and others gathered at our home, three State Security officers appeared in a State Security patrol car. Inside was a handcuffed Luis Ramón. The agents asked me about his medical history and apparently had decided to take him to the doctor after all.
One of the officers told me to be "very careful" because they could charge my visitors with "delinquent association" or "illegal association" because so many people were there.
I asked them if this was "a warning or a threat?" One officer answered, "No, it is a suggestion."
Those present included Bertha Antúnez Pernet of the Pedro Luis Boitel Civic Resistance Movement, Alejandro García Sardiñas of the National Council for Civil Rights in Villa Clara Province, and General Secretary Librado Linares García, Manolo San Luis Degrado and Guillermo Fariñas Hernández of the Cuban Reflection Movement.
My husband, a correspondent for Cuba Free Press, remains in jail and apparently was taken to his appointment with the cardiologist. I was very grateful for our visitors. None of them are criminals or inciting anyone to break the law. They are people who take an interest in the welfare of my husband and are absolutely not in an "illegal association."
