WHEN CASTRO IS AWAY, EQUIPMENT AND APPLIANCES VANISH FROM TEACHING HOSPITAL. By Francisco Garcia, for Cuba Free Press.
Ciego de Avila.- No sooner had the 650-bed Roberto Rodriguez Provincial Teaching Hospital in Moron opened its doors more than 11 years ago than disappearance of its equipment began. It had been fully supplied with everything needed for work at full capacity. It has 30 wards and each had one television set, for example.
Besides most of the TV sets, among other things that mysteriously vanished since then were about 60 refrigerators and medical equipment indispensable to the hospital's function, such as propane gas stoves, wheelchairs and escort chairs for moving patients unable to walk, hundreds of light bulbs, shower hardware, wash basins, etc.
Then, about three years ago it was learned that Commandant Fidel Castro was going to visit the hospital. As if by magic, the hospital suddenly was fully stocked with everything, even color televisions!
After the commander's visit, everything began to disappear again. Many of the refrigerators in the wards have again completely vanished while others merely "lost" their motors.
This is a teaching hospital primarily concerned with the care of the population in the northern zone of Ciego de Avila Province. It possesses the only burn ward in the province.
It may be news to the commandant if he reads this and learns what happens when he is not present. There is no indication that anyone has investigated the hospital's expensive losses.
