SANTIAGO WATER SUPPLY SITUATION REMAINS CRITICAL. By Norman Herrera, Cuba Free Press.

Santiago de Cuba.- The water supply for some 500,000 inhabitants of this city continues critical and no solution appears in sight. Some pipelines broke and a severe drought is occurring which has been blamed on the weather phenomenon known as La Niņa.

Last month the water was turned on only March 4, 13, 21 and 27. Despite Santiago's having several dams nearby, residents are forced to look for water and haul it from wherever they can find it. The water has been shut off as much as nine days consecutively both in the historic inner city as well as in the suburbs.

In one new suburban area known as "Micros" residents often go as much as 15 days without water.
