WOMAN'S JUBILEE CELEBRATED IN EL COBRE. By Vivian Acosta, Cuba Free Press.
Palma Soriano.- A jubilee of the "Woman and the Grass Roots Communities" was celebrated on March 25 in the Basilica of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, Cuba's patron saint.
The parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Palma Soriano was represented by 150 women of all ages. Those who attended said a spirit of faith, brotherhood and hope impacted all at the Catholic Church's holy place.
The Palma Soriano women's pilgrimage started when they boarded trucks for the trip. Even as they were climbing aboard, the women began to sing songs to the Lord and to the Mother of El Cobre and they continued singing for the entire trip. Upon arriving, they stood in front of the central stairway leading to the Basilica and sang "Mary is that Woman" and "The Mambi Virgin."
The Eucharist was presided over by Monseņor Pedro Meurice who focused on the theme of "Woman as God's creature, as the foundation of life and as the axis and center of spirituality and the future." He also said woman is "indispensable for God in the plan of salvation and of humanity."
They are the "weaker sex," Monseņor Meurice said, because they have the strength and power to know that man and life have no reason to exist without woman. He also emphasized that Jesus loves the woman in a special way because she suffers more in all spheres of life and Jesus was resurrected to give true liberation to the woman. Christ wants the Cuban woman to be really free in spirit and body, he said.
Monseņor Meurice referred to the spirituality of the woman of our nation and said she needs to grow in resolution and in the love of God.
