FEARFUL CONDITIONS REPORTED BY RELATIVES VISITING BONIATO PRISON. By Haydee Rodriguez, Cuba Free Press.

Santiago de Cuba.- Relatives of political and other prisoners in the province's Boniato Prison report conditions are so bad that some of them must sit on the floor for two hours when visiting because of a lack of chairs.

In the middle of the courtyard of this prison there was a tree where the visitors sat in the shade but the prison officials had the tree cut down and also said they planned a fence to separate inmates from their relatives during the visits.

There is no water fountain or bathroom where the visitors are allowed. The prison officials frighten the visitors by telling them they must not let their children go get drinks from the communal water fountain or use the bathrooms because they can become victims of prisoners serving sentences for murder and rape. Prisoners go to the bathroom during the visits and so do the children so the relatives are subjected to real, not imaginary, dangers.
