INDEPENDENT CUBAN JOURNALIST WINS INTERNATIONAL PRIZES. By Orestes Martín Pérez, Cuba Free Press.
Havana - Armando Añel Guerrero, Havana correspondent for the Cuba Free Press agency, received word here that his essay, "Young People In Defense of Democracy: A Re-Examination Of The Concept" won the first prize in the 1999 (sixth) edition of the "Liberty Award." This prize is open throughout Latin American and is sponsored jointly by the Mexican magazine, "Profiles of the Twenty-First Century" and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation based in Germany.
The general topic for competitors was "Youth and Politics: How Can Rejection be Overcome?" According to the organizers of the competition, this was the first time that a Cuban entrant has won this distinction.
As in previous competitions, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation rewards first place with an invitation to address a seminar at its International Academy for Leadership Training in Germany. This coming April the seminar will be focused on "Freedom and the Market Economy" in Kottenheide, Germany.
In the Latin American competition, the second and third prizes went to Argentine contestants.
