PROSTITUTION AMONG CHILDREN IS ON THE RISE IN LAS TUNAS, CUBA. By Magdelivia Hidalgo Gonzalez, Cuba Free Press.

Las Tunas.- Prostitution among children between the ages of 12 to 15 is on the rise in this city. They are playing the sex game in exchange for 20 Cuban pesos, the equivalent of about 90 cents to a dollar at today's exchange rate.

This phenomenon can be observed at the cabarets, discos and certain parks that because of their location make this trade rather easy to take place. Some of these parks are located across from Hotel Ferroviario, the Taino Cabaret and Hotel Caribe. The clientele consists of mature adults who encourage proliferation of this activity. The clients are not only the foreign tourist, but also those relatively few Cubans who are paid good wages.

"Cubans get a break on the price charged for this service, because it is safer with them," said a 13-year-old girl, a student of a school that emphasizes athletic sports. She justifies her skipping school to trade her wares as a means of survival. These girls come from homes that are facing serious difficulties and provide few social outlets. This, they say, justifies their illegal activities.

As is usually the case, the children in prostitution are also involved with drugs. This makes prostitution and illegal drug use a reality in socialist Cuba without any foreseeable solution. And to think that this is happening in a socialist country, after the rulers have been telling Cubans that this only happens in brutal capitalistic societies.

Last year, four 12-year-old girls from Las Tunas ran away from home to go to the capital city of Havana to work as prostitutes. Their virginal condition allotted them about $1,000 for their first night of sex. This story touched the hearts of all Cuban mothers who fear that their daughter might opt for that life since most mothers are not able to give their teenage girls the things they yearn for.
