JAILED DISSIDENT OF THE OPPOSITION MOVEMENT IS ALLOWED VISITOR. By Armando Anel, for Cuba Free Press.
Havana.- Clara Morales, president of the Movimiento 13 de Julio (July 13 Movement) on Feb. 4 was allowed to visit her husband, Jose Aguiar and Carlos Oquendo, both in jail and members of the Movement. The two men had been transferred from the Department of Investigations at 100th and Aldabo Sts. to the Valle Grande prison outside Havana.
Mrs. Morales said, "My husband and Carlos Oquendo are currently being jailed in the same area as are common criminals." She said neither man had been allowed to shower or clean up. Water is short at the facilities. Both were unshaven and unkempt and were sleeping on the prison floor.
The prison at Valle Grande was built with a capacity for 1,200 inmates but currently warehouses more than 3,000 prisoners.
Jose Aguiar and Carlos Oquendo together with the dissidents Diosdado Gonzalez and Marcel Valenzuela were arrested by the political police on Dec. 17, 1999, while on their way to El Rincon in the municipality of Santiago de las Vegas. They were charged with fomenting public disorder and resisting arrest.
