POLICE IGNORE THREATS TO INDEPENDENT JOURNALISTS. By Adalberto Yero, Cuba Free Press.
Santiago.- A neighbor of two independent journalists employed by Cuba Free Press threatened them with beating on Sunday, Jan. 9. The two, Margarita Yero and the writer reported the threat later to Chief Bismark Cabrera of the local office of the National Revolutionary Police but the chief made no attempt to investigate details. Such inaction has occurred in connection with previous threats to independent journalists.
The threats were made by Zeilin Banderas Aleman, the correspondents' neighbor who lives on their same street. Mrs. Banderas made known her intentions through General Secretary Rolando Bestard Fabart of the Club for Political Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners as well as to Gerardo Gonzalez of the Brothers of the Faith and Director Enrique Caballeros Osborne of the Pedro Luis Boitel Construction Brigade. She shouted to them that both she and her family will beat up the two journalists before they leave Cuba.
Bestard and Caballeros Osborne had just finished repairing the roof of the journalists' home when Mrs. Banderas voiced her plans. At the same time Mrs. Banderas was making her threats, some anonymous voice from the street also was shouting insults at Bestard and Caballeros who had retreated to the Yeros' home.
The construction brigade consists of several dissidents, including Bestard and is under leadership of Caballeros Osborne. The building crew had just finished repairing the Yeros' roof. Unknown assailants had damaged the roof by throwing heavy stones at it at night over several days.
The woman voicing the threats, Zeilin Banderas Aleman resides with some 20 other people at her home. One of them is Lucia Aleman Medina, president of the Santa Lucia's Committee for Defense of the Revolution (CDR), a government spy agency.
