POLICING GROUP CATCHES TONS OF SMUGGLERS' LOBSTER AND FISH. By Luis Ramon Hernandez, Cuba Free Press.

Villa Clara.- A strong policing group formed by members of the Fisheries Department and the regular police confiscated more than 9.5 tons of lobsters and 6.5 tons of fish in 1999, just in this one township.

The captured seafood was being carried in many ways, such as in fuel trucks with double hulls or inside inner tubes. The captured smugglers usually were trying to reach Varadero or Havana. According to Director Guillermo Llorente of the "Fisheries Inspectors' Group," 34 boats of different types and sizes also were confiscated along with more than 3000 meters of fishing nets and other fishing gear.

Fines for various offenses totaled 800,000 pesos, not counting penalties for fishing without a license or with expired licenses. Cubans no longer can just go fishing with a little hook in any river or bay; they can't enjoy what nature gives freely. Everything must be controlled.
