THE POLITICAL POLICE PREVENT DISSIDENTS' MEETING. By Armando Anel, Cuba Free Press.
Havana.- Cuban political police with the Office of State Security (OSS) detained Hector Palacios Ruiz, Osvaldo Paya Sardinas, Jose Hidalgo Gato, Jose Orlando Gonzalez Bridon and other well-known dissidents for several hours Jan. 25 as part of an operation, presumably, to prevent a meeting to discuss the document "Todos Unidos" (All United). It already had been presented by the "moderate" members of opposition group to various officials from other countries who attended the November Ibero-American Summit in this city.
"We were going to study a document that seems of vital importance to the country," according to Hector Palacios, director of the Center for Social Studies. Police detained him and his wife from 6 a.m. to about 5 p.m.
"This document is some sort of methodological guide, where the authors pose and outline a series of concepts, strictly peaceful in nature, that even take into account the Cuban government. But it seems that the National Security police do not want us to come in contact with the document and they persevere in their efforts of keeping us divided and fractured."
Previously, about 18 dissidents had confirmed that they would attend the meeting. Some of them are residents from the provinces of Havana and Matanzas, who, according to Palacios were prevented from traveling to the capital city.
