EVANGELICAL GATHERING HAS NOTABLE POLITICAL OVERTONES By Odalys Curbelo, Cuba Free Press.

PINAR DEL RIO - This province's Evangelical Churches Convention was celebrated during the morning hours of Saturday June 5, in the parking lot of this city's "Capitan San Luis," with a notable difference from other times.

Presiding over the event was the Reverend Pedro Oscar León and more than 1,000 people attended -- including the Communist Party's secretary.

During his address the president of the organizing commission exalted Fidel Castro's government. He also praised the organizations which were involved in developing the celebration in an unusual manner for liturgical celebrations. Some listeners suggested this was an excess of gratitude to the government and the party. Some were provoked - whether religious or not - to express the view that the convention had taken on the characteristics of an official act.

The opening with the national anthem was conspicuous, since the present constitution establishes that only in official acts may the anthem be used.

Some in attendance noted that not all the evangelical churches were represented, since the gathering had overtones of political manipulation.
