GOVERNMENT SHOOTS TWO MORE PRISONERS TO DEATH, POSSIBLY MOVING TOTAL TO AT LEAST 12 THIS YEAR By Ricardo GonzŠlez Alfonso, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The death penalty through firing squad was carried out here on May 29 against Carlos Rafael PelŠez Prieto, 33, and Sergio Duarte Scull, 32, possibly bringing the total to 12 such executions so far this year.
The mens's trial began Jan. 22, 1999, as case No. 1 of 1999, at the Provincial Tribunal of Havana. The charges included murder, theft through violence, intimidation and the carrying of illegal weapons. On Feb. 16 the appeal took place. Later, as established by the current Cuban Constitution, the sentence was ratified by the Council of State.
Cuba Free Press's source said the last visit granted to Paleaz took place May 27 and that his family had not been advised of his execution. The last meeting was attended by his parents and his older son. Pelaez was not allowed to say his good-byes to his wife or two-month-old daughter.
Duarte Scull was a resident of the municipality of Central Havana and Palaez Prieto of East Havana.
The Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation, in a partial study has estimated that so far this year at least 12 individuals have been executed in Cuba.
