DISSIDENTS IN CUBA FAST TO SHOW BACKING FOR MIAMI HUNGER STRIKE By Ricardo González Alfonso, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The national coordinator of Cuban prisoners and ex-political prisoners, objecting to the capture of the vessel "Democracia" by the United States, called on members of the 14 provincial delegations of the island nation to a 72-hour fast, starting today Wednesday at 9 a.m.
Regina del Sol, spokesperson of the organizations confirmed that 62 dissidents headed by Aida Valdés Santana, president of the opposition organization, are joining in the fast in their respective homes.
The civil disobedience activity consists of ingesting only liquids. In a document given to the press, the national coordinator of prisoners and ex-political prisoners made it known that this nonviolent activity's purpose is to protest the detention of the "Democracia" and to support Miami hunger striker Ramón Saúl Sánchez, head of the U.S. Democracy Movement.
Under a presidential emergency declaration, the boat was captured by U.S. authorities some months ago. Sánchez, after unsuccessful legal negotiations, initiated a hunger strike on May 4 so as to pressure the U.S. authorities to return the craft.
