ITALIAN PARLIAMENT MEMBERS MEET WITH TEN OPPOSITION DISSIDENTS By Efrén Martínez, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - Ten Cuban leaders of groups opposing the Castro administration met March 31 with three members of the Italian parliament representative of the left. The meeting was in the Italian Embassy in this capital.
The Italians were Senators Ercilia Salvato of the Socialist Refoundation Party, Francesca Escolopetti of the Center-Right Party and Franco di Luca of an environmental movement. According to Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina, who attended as president of the Cuban Movement of Young People for Democracy, there was an atmosphere of mutual respect at the meeting.
Rodríguez Lobaina said the parliament members belong to a commission that is fighting the death penalty and they traveled to Cuba out of interest in the case of the two Salvadorans who have been sentenced to capital punishment for terrorism. The senators exchanged opinions with members of the Cuban opposition groups about Cuban problems and expressed concern for the four members of the Working Group of the Internal Dissidence and Law No. 88, popularly known in Cuba as the "Gag Law."
According to Rodríguez Lobaina, the Italians expressed concerns about these matters to Vice Minister Carlos Lage and to National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcón.
Cubans in the meeting were Oswaldo Payá of the Christian Liberation Movement, Leonel Morejón Almagro of Naturpaz (Nature-Peace), Osvaldo Alfonso of the Cuban Liberal Democratic Party, Pedro Pablo Ramos and Fernando Sánchez, both of the Democratic Solidarity Party; Gerardo Sánchez of the Cuban Commission of Human Rights and National Reconciliation, Rafael León of the Cuban Democratic Project, Manuel Cuesta Morúa of the Socialist Stream, Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina, abovementioned, and Magaly de Armas, wife of Vladimiro Roca, one of the imprisoned members of the Working Group of the Internal Dissidence. > Efrén Martínez, Cuba Free Press.
