REPORTS TELL OF TUBERCULOSIS AT CANALETA PRISON; THREE DEAD By Pedro Arguelles Morán, Cuba Free Press.
CIEGO DE AVILA - Eight pulmonary tuberculosis patients are being held in isolation at the provincial prison of Canaleta, in Ciego de Avila Province. Six of the patients have TB in early stages and the other two have advanced stages.
Some of these prisoners are coughing up blood. They are held in damp and cold cells which are very inappropriate for their disease. Those with tuberculosis also are allowed to go out in the sun with the other prisoners, thus possibly exposing them to the illness.
Medications are not being given on time and medicines prescribed by the specialists often are not provided. The physician in charge sees the patients in their cells every 15 days. They are forced to use the same clothes for 10 days before getting clean ones.
The Political Prisoners from Canaleta report that during the past few months pulmonary tuberculosis has caused the death of three prisoners.
