ROCA'S LAWYER SAYS SHE WILL FILE APPEAL OF HIS CONVICTION By Tania Quintero, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - Dr. Amelia Rodriguez, lawyer for Vladimiro Roca Antúnez, has told Cuba Free Press that she is preparing to present an appeal to the conviction of Roca on various charges said to constitute sedition. The deadline for appeals is March 27.
She said she had conversed at length with Roca March 12 and hopes to have another visit with him to obtain details to use in the appeal. His sentence was for five years in prison, one more than those of his companions, Félix Bonne Carcassés y René Gómez Manzano. The case mainly involved their jointly signed public statement known as "The homeland belongs to all of us."
Cuba Free Press has learned that Bonne and Marta Beatriz Roque (sentenced to 42 months) do not intend to appeal. In the case of the fourth of the working group of dissidence who was convicted, René Gómez Manzano, he is a lawyer by profession and his brother Jorge said that today he was going to visit the Villa Marista, the jail used by the Office of State Security (OSS).
The brother also said that if Gómez Manzano agrees, Dr. José Ángel Izquierdo will present an appeal on his behalf.
Cuba Free Press also learned that on March 17 Roca had a special visit from his brothere Francisco Roca who was able to take a notary public with him so that Vladimiro could sign a document yielding his rights to an apartment in which their mother, Dulce María Antúnez had lived until her death in 1995.
The Roca Antúnez family used the opportunity to conduct this business because of Vladimiro's presence in Havana. He previously had been held at the Ariza prison in Cienfuegos province, about 180 miles east of the capital, for 14 of the 19 months he spent in jail while awaiting his trial. Some expect that he will be sent even further from Havana during his coming incarceration.
