OSS AGENTS ARREST INDEPENDENT JOURNALIST EFRÉN MARTíNEZ PULGARóN By Odalys Curbelo, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - Two agents of the Office of State Security (OSS) arrested the religious article specialist of Cuba Free Press, Efrén Martínez Pulgarón, on the afternoon of Feb. 26.
Reliable sources told this reporter that the independent journalist was intercepted near the home of some friends in the community of El Vedado. It was reported that Martínez Pulgarón had time only to leave his bicycle at a safe place and to tell a boy inside the house, "I am being detained by two people."
Martínez earlier was arrested in the summer of 1997 and held for 38 days in the OSS headquarters of Pinar del Rio province without charges being brought against him. The detention of this journalist might be related to the fresh wave of repression after the announcement of the new "Titanic" law.
Meanwhile, the trial of the four leaders of the working group for the Internal Dissidence has been set for March. The four are Vladimiro Roca Antúnez, Beatriz Roque, Félix Bonne Carcassés and René Manzano., They were imprisoned some 19 months ago after issuing a public paper entitled "The Fatherland Belongs to All of Us." Last September the government charged them with "sedition and other crimes against the security of the state."
