'RAGWEED' WAR PROMISED IN 1959 MAY BEGIN, SOON By Tania Quintero

HAVANA - In 1959 the revolutionary government promised to wage a successful war on the "marabú" (kind of ragweed typical of Cuba), one of the most ferocious wild plants of Cuba's natural environment.

The revolutionary government even promised to eradicate the weed from Cuba's savannas (tropical grasslands).

Now, because of a technology under experimental testing at the Pastures and Fodder Station in Camaguey province, the war may soon begin.

The revolutionary government says the effectiveness of the war will depend on a systematic application of mechanical, biological, physical and chemical methods, plus a blockade, i.e., a quarantine against the importation of the demonic bush.
