POLICE LAUNCH NEW WAVE OF REPRESSION IN HAVANA >By Odalys Curbelo, Cuba Free Press. >
>HAVANA - Political police arrested 12 members of opposition groups since Jan. 22. Apprehended in their homes or on the street, all remain in custody as of time of writing.
Among those taken in this offensive is Dr. Oscar Elías Biscet, President of the Lawton Association for Human Rights (imprisoned Jan. 23). Two days later, another member of the Lawton group, a female independent dissident and photojournalist was apprehended. On Jan. 26 another independent journalist was jailed.
>Sources within the opposition and observers say the repressive campaign was unleashed when the Lawton Foundation for Human Rights announced a pilgrimage for Jan. 25 from the Church in Luyanó to the Plaza of the Revolution. This was to commemorate the first anniversary of the mass given by Pope John Paul II at this Plaza.
The same sources believe more arrests will follow because of persistent rumors that several opposition groups will stage silent protests on Jan. 28 to commemorate the birth of Cuba's national hero, Jose Marti.
