ARIZA JAILERS DENY MEDICAL AID TO INDEPENDENT JOURNALIST By Hirán González González, Cuba Free Press.

AGUADA DE PASJEROS - Authorities at Ariza prison in Cienfuegos province have categorically denied medical assistance to independent journalist Bernardo Rogelio Arévalo Padrón, a political prisoner in Las Villas.

According to his wife's report on her Jan. 28 visit, Arévalo said his vision has diminished progressively during recent months and penal authorities make no effort to have him checked by a specialist.

Arévalo Padrón has been detained since Nov. 28, 1997 for "desacato" (disrespect) of Commandant Fidel Castro and Carlos Lage, vice president of the Council of State. He is serving a six-year sentence in a maximum security cell. His family places the responsibility for his health problems on prison authorities.
