ROMAN CATHOLICS SCHEDULE CONTINENTAL MEETING FOR HAVANA By Efrén Martínez Pulgarón, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The Episcopal Council of Latin America (CELAN) will meet in this city Feb. 14-17 in part because of its being close to the first anniversary of the visit of Pope John Paul II to the island.
The conclave will bring together about 30 cardinals plus archbishops and bishops of Canadá, United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.
A message of Cardinal Jaime Ortega to the priests, religious leaders and other of the faith in the archdiocese of HAVANA says: "A year after the visit of the Pope to Cuba and in relation to the celebration in Rome of the Synod of América, the bishops of the American Continents will gather for the first time since His Holiness handed to them in Mexico a document. This document contains all that the bishops of America reflected upon in the Mexican assembly and summarizes all that the Pope presented in the form of a basic program for the Catholic Church in America at the dawn of the third millenium of the Christian Era."
The Havana archbishop said that this February gathering is of "special significance" to the Roman Catholics of the Americas and said Cuba was selected to be the host of this gathering because of the impact throughout the continents of the papal visit to the island.
A eucharistic celebration in the Cathedral of Havana will begin Sunday Feb. 14, 1999, at 5 p.m. All the invited priests will participate in the celebration together with the Cuban bishops. Officials from the Vatican and of other Catholic organizations of America will also attend this gathering.
