SECRETARY OF THE POPE'S NUNCIO IN CUBA ADDRESSES PARISHIONERS By Efrén Martínez Pulgarón, Cuba Free Press.

HAVANA - Monsignor Santos Garllenmi, secretary of the Nunciatura Apostólica in Cuba, presided at the mass in the cathedral of this capital in commemoration of the first anniversary of the visit of Pope John Paul II to the island.

Monsignor Santos began his homily with words from the book of Isaias: "A great light was seen by the people who walked in darkness, who were in land of shadows and a light shown upon them." He said the prophecy was of great significance in helping to reflect on the memories of the papal visit.

"In all truthfulness," said Garllenmi, "to us and for all the Cuban people those were days of light, of joy, of hope as the words of the prophet turned into reality."

The pope's representative referred extensively to the apostolic journey and compared various Christian teachings with the message that Juan Pablo II left with the people of the island.

"The Pope walked among us like the evangelic planter, planting the seed of the Lord's word," said Santos Garllenmi and he asked if the Cuban hearts have been dried like unfruitful land or if the daily worries have killed the seed.

During the mass he read a message from the pope to the people of Cuba. Then he said, "Today, we also want to pray for the Pope and we ask our Lady of Charity to comfort and strengthen our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, so that he will take us across the threshold of the third millenium and so that the memory of his visit remains alive in our memory and hearts and that we pledge to answer his calls to work in our midst, on our island of Cuba, for the kingdom of God, the kingdom of truth and life, the kingdom of holiness and grace, the kingdom of justice, love and peace."

At the conclusion of the ceremony the parishioners had the opportunity to watch a video, the documentary "Cuba, te amo" (Cuba, I love you), by Alberto Michellini. It is a short film on the visit of the pope in January 1998.
