GOVERNMENT ACCUSES INDEPENDENT JOURNALIST OF "DANGEROUSNESS" TO SOCIETY By Ricardo González Alfonso, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA- 24 year-old independent journalist Jesús Joel Díaz Hernández was >arrested at 6 AM on January 18th, in the city of Morón, Ciego de Avila >province. He is accused of "social dangerousness." His trial was scheduled for the following day, which gave the family less than >24 hours to procure a lawyer.
Díaz Hernández is a correspondent for the Cooperativa Avileña Cooperative of Independent Journalists. Previously, he had been issued six official warnings for not working for the state. At the end of 1996, after an "act of repudiation" staged with a mob at his house, he had been fired from his work center at the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources.
According to Title 72 of Cuba's Penal Code, " dangerousness is considered to be a person's special proclivity to commit crimes, as manifested in behavior contrary to the norms of socialist morals."
Editorial note: On Jan. 19 Díaz Hernández was sentenced to 4 years in jail.
