TRAFFIC IN AND ABUSE OF DRUGS ON THE RISE IN CUBA By Ariel Tapia, Cuba Free Press.

HAVANA - A new report from the Interior Ministry documents an increase in the traffic and abuse of drugs in Cuba.

During 1998, Cuban police confiscated 106.49 kilograms of cocaine and 80.52 kilograms of marijuana. From January to November 1998, 1216 people had been arrested for traffic and consumption of drugs. Sixty minors were also arrested for drug consumption and aiding drug traffickers.

The authorities believe another 100 kilograms of cocaine are being sold in the local market. The source of the cocaine, according to the police, is the "landings" of drugs being hidden by coastal inhabitants.
