GOVERNMENT BROADENS CENSORSHIP MEASURES AGAINST MEDIA By Por Ariel Tapia, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - Cubans "celebrated" the end of the year with new censorhip measures against the media. Without previous official notice since mid-December, the government has blocked out transmissions by television stations using Ultra High Frequency UHF.>
Observers say the order to obstruct channels from North America which may be received in Cuba with the help of special antennas, was motivated> by the incoming "Television Marti" signals through UHF. They sometimes broadcast criticism of Fidel Castro.>
The first obstruction was against Miami's "Channel 23," from the chain called "TeleMundo," with Spanish programs. Its favorable reception by Cubans apparently greatly worried the authorities. >
Underground manufacturers of UHF antennas have confirmed that since about two weeks ago, it has not been possible to watch any channel with this frequency in Havana. >
