GOVERNMENT ARRESTS CUBA PRESS JOURNALIST IN MANZANILLO By Juan Antonio Sánchez, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - National Revolutionary Police arrested Jesus Labrador Arias, 42, correspondent for this agency in Manzanillo, Granma province, December 29, as he was leaving the local Civilian Identification office. He was taken to the police headquarters
When his wife went to the station later, she was told that Labrador Arias was under investigation and to bring personal items for her husband the next day. She inferred her husband will be held for some days.
Labrador Arias has been harassed for some time by the Office of the State Security (OSS). His home, where he resides with his wife and sons, has been stoned several times by unknown people, always in early morning hours.
The reporter has been very busy in recent months, which seems to irritate the authorities. His detailed dispatches which cover the poverty, violence, rising crime rate and other social ills in the eastern portion of the Island.
He has often been taken to different OSS offices to be threatened by officials. He has been warned that such work as an independent journalist could lead to a prison sentence.
