"REFLECTION ROUNDTABLE" HOLDS FIRST MEETING OF "MODERATE OPPOSITION" By Odalys Curbelo, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The Reflection Roundtable of the "moderate opposition" held its first meeting on December 14 in Havana.
The participants included Fernando Sanchez Lopez, president of the Democratic Solidarity Party (DSP); Rogelio Travieso Perez, DSP vice-president; Rafael Leon, coordinator of the Cuban Democratic Project; Juan Francisco Monzon, president of the Marti Democratic Party; Pedro Pablo Alvarez, president of the Unitarian Council of Workers; Manuel Cuesta Morua, general secretary of the Cuban Socialist Democratic Current (CSDC); and Leonardo Calvo, Oscar Laffita and Dimas Castellano of the executive board of the CSDC. Osvaldo Alfonso, president of the Democratic Liberal Party, was an invited guest.
Some items on the agenda at the request of the DSP members were: The need: To create and strengthen a moderate alternative with a minimum of common ideas so as to present a viable project of a gradual democratization of the Cuban society; To establish periodic meetings of the roundtable at the sites of the various member organizations.
The agenda for the next meeting will include the foundation and the requisites for organizing and institutionalizing the Roundtable. Each organization will present their proposal.
As was later learned by this reporter, one day later, in exile, the Social Democratic Coordinating committee, the Christian Democratic Party, Solidarity for Cuban Workers, the Information Bureau for Human Rights, and the Confederation of Cuban Farmers met to create a similar Roundtable of discussion, based on the same principles as the one founded on the Island.
