HEPATITIS OUTBREAK IN CAIBARIEN, CUBA, LINKED TO WATER By Héctor Trujillo Pis, Cuba Free Press.
CAIBARIEN - Parents of several students who have been diagnosed as having one of the hepatitis viruses have reported the disease outbreak among as many as 100 students in the agricultural university preparatory school called Maria Escobar Laredo. The school in in Dolores, in this municipality of Villa Clara province.
The outbreak has been attributed to contamination of the water source, a well used by the school for drinking water. The origin of contamination may be sewer water that has seeped into the well.
Several professors also have shown symptoms of the virus. The parents who reported the outbreak said sanitary conditions at the school are poor because of a shortage of soap and inadequate plastic cups.
The school has experienced several severe health problems among the students for some years. Because of this, the city health authorities have said they would take measures to control the outbreak and others that may occur.
