VILLA CLARA - The Roman Catholic Church ordained Monsignor Arturo González Amador, 42, as auxiliary bishop of Santa Clara in this city's cathedral on December 20.
Villa Clara's Bishop Monsignor Fernando Prego swore in the auxiliary bishop in the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio, Beniamino Estella; Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, all of Cuba's Bishops and the priests of the central region.
About 1,000 church members filled the temple and nearby streets and sang the Cuban National Anthem at the arrival of the clerics. They also cheered the Pope and their new pastor.
Monsignor González Amador is the youngest Cuban bishop. He was born in the municipality of Placetas, Santa Clara Province. He chose for his motto during ordination, "Trust in the Lord and do what is good."
The festivities started at 10 a.m. with the strong attendance of Cuban government paramilitary forces.
