GENETIC ENGINEERS SAY TILAPIA WILL HELP FEED PEOPLE By Ariel Tapia, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The Cuban Center of Biotechnologic Genetic Engineering located here in the capital reports it has developed a transgenic tilapia.
The scientists say this species of fresh water fish grows at double the rate while maintaining the same smell and taste characteristics of the ordinary tilapia. The researchers provided proof that they said demonstrates that the discovery will not endanger consumers in any way.
"All the state's regulations have been followed," according to Mario Estrada, chief of the Department of Transgenetics of the Investigative Institute. Government authorities already have announced that the commercialization of the production of the new type of fish will provide 70 tons of tilapia by the end of 1999.
Despite its privileged geographic location and borders on the sea, the country has a large deficit of edible fish, which has been rationed since 1962.
