AUTHORITIES TREAT POLITICAL PRISONER CRUELLY By Hector Trujillo. Cuba Free Press.
CAIBARIEN - Authorities of the Guamajal Prison of Santa Clara have just removed Cecilio Montagudo Sanchez from solitary confinement after he spent 21 days there. He also was denied visits and presents from his family during the time.
The solitary confinement was only one of many cruelties imposed on him, according to reports reaching Secretary General Librado Linares Garcia of the Cuban Movement of Reflection. Linares passed along the reports to Cuba Free Press.
One repressive measure taken against Montagudo was to place him in the No. 3 detachment, which houses criminals sentenced for crimes of violence. This brings constant hostilities and harassment by other inmates. Authorities also took away all his utensils, books and magazines given him by his family, and they denied him medical care.
Reports indicate that the harsh measures were developed under the "orientation" of a " Major Alberto" of the Office of State Security (OSS).
These measures followed an incident some weeks ago when the political prisoner was awakened by his "re-educator," Josť Luis Collado. He told Montagudo that his dissemination of articles of the Univesal Declaration of Human Rights among fellow prisoners was going to cause him serious problems.
Montagudo has been in jail since September 15, 1997, when he was detained in his home by agents of the OSS who searched his premises and then took him to the Santa Clara political police. There he was held for several days of harsh questioning.
