GOVERNMENT REGISTRY SUMMONS, THREATENS BLIND ATTORNEY JUAN CARLOS GONZÁLEZ LEYVA By Damián Abreu Pérez, Cuba Free Press

CIEGO DE AVILA - The Cuban Justice Department's Registry of Organizations of this Province on November 16 summoned blind attorney Juan Carlos González Leyva of the Ignacio Agramonte opposition group to appear before a Registry official.

Also present at the meeting was the provincial director of justice (PDOJ), who accused González Leyva of creating an organization of independent (non-governmental) blind people, and threatened him with sanctions should he continue with his activity.

The PDOJ told Juan Carlos González that such an "alternative organization" of blind people was not authorized because only the Asociación Nacional del Ciego (the national association of blind people "ANCY"), operated by the Island's Communist government, is authorized to exist.

Attorney González Leyva maintained his independent position, and said that even if the alternative organization of blind people were not allowed, if it were created, he "would gladly" be a part of that organization.
