MINISTRY OF INTERIOR BLOCKS U.S. OFFICIALS'INTERVIEW WITH PRISONER By Efrén Martínez Pulgarón, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - The Office of State Security (OSS), Cuban Ministry of Interior (MININT), has blocked an attempt by U.S. officials to interview political prisoner Reinaldo Alfaro Garcia, according to his mother, Beatriz García Álvarez.
She told this reporter that the U.S. Department for Political Refugees of the Special Interests' Office in Havana arranged to visit Alfaro on November 13. She said, "I went to the Villa Marista (OSS headquarters) to obtain permission for the visit. There I met with Capt. Orlando Jorge. He said that in his opinion the U.S. officials could visit the Eastern Compound prison to interview Reinaldo."
However, the captain suggested that she also visit the Department of Jails and Prisons, which has charge of such matters. Consequently, the president of the Association Against National Injustice (ALFIN) telephoned the U.S. Interests Office to inquire about such permission. She was told that this permission was not required under the migratory agreements between the two countries.
Meanwhile, the Cuban Department of Jails and Prisons did not grant permission for U.S. officials to visit Alfaro and directed that he not be made available for the interview.
